Kindle Publishing – Six Figures a Month for an eBook Author!
On September of 2012, Amazon released details about the success of its new programs for authors who want to get involved in self-publishing for Kindle. In the same month, Amazon also released information about a new wave of e-readers and tablets at a conference in Southern California. According to Amazon, 27 of the top 100 Kindle Books were created using the Kindle Direct Publishing, a system that removes the necessity of traditional publishers and lets authors deal with Amazon directly. As a result, authors are able to get their book published in mere hours.
What does this mean for future authors?
Bernard Starr wrote for the Huffington Post, stating that authors no longer need a publisher to sell their books. This trend of self-publishing has made authors realize that if you’re not a big-time author, publishers can do little or none for you at all.
But who were the people who succeeded in self-publishing?
First up, we have Hugh Howey, who admitted to earning six figures a month by selling his eBooks on Kindle. When he first stumbled across KDP, he didn’t imagine that it would open up a new world for him. Without digital publishing, his books wouldn’t even be published. His first book, entitled “Wool”, was published in the year 2011 and he never promoted it. On October of 2011, he was shocked to see his sales go from dozens to thousands. He had to take screenshots and posted it on his Facebook to prove to his friends that he was on Amazon’s Top 100 list. Before he was an author, Howey was a bookseller and a yacht captain. Now, reports are stating that director Ridley Scott has optioned his story and New York publishers have approached him about book deals, but he said that he wanted to continue with self-publishing so he doesn’t lose the rights to his works.
Another popular Cinderella story born out of KDP is Colleen Hoover, a mother of three kids, who was able to quit her job and buy a new home because of her bestselling books on Kindle. In January of 2012, she released her first novel entitled “Slammed” and her second book “Point of Retreat” was released on February the same year. By June 2012, both of her books made it to the top of Kindle’s bestseller list and today she has 5 titles to her name as an eBook author.
If you think that KDP is something that doesn’t guarantee success, think again.
